The Department for Culture, Media and Sport (DCMS) has responsibility for tourism in the UK and sponsors the British Tourist Authority as the statutory body responsible for promoting the UK abroad. Its grant in aid for BTA for 2000/1 is 37 million.

The DCMS has a specific additional remit for the development of tourism in England. The responsibility for the development of Scottish tourism lies with The Scottish Executive.
